It’s unlikely Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler are ever going to fight again but that rivalry is the gift that just keeps on giving.
At UFC Tampa on Saturday, Chandler’s longtime friend and teammate Michael Johnson delivered a jaw-dropping knockout in his fight against Ottman Azaitar to cap off the preliminary card. Afterwards, Chandler celebrated the victory with a reminder about arguably Johnson’s most memorable finish when he scored a vicious finish over Poirier back in 2016.
“Best right hook in UFC history,” Chandler wrote on Twitter. “Never forget this one.”
Chandler posted his comment along with a clip showing Johnson’s knockout over Poirier, which was the first loss he suffered after making the move from featherweight to lightweight in the UFC.
Well that comment definitely caught Poirier’s attention, who fired back at Chandler with a reminder of his own about what happened in the first and only time they ever met in the octagon.
“Remember when I beat your ass?” Poirier wrote back to Chandler. “You are 2-4 in the UFC, Muscle Milk Mike.”
Following a Fight of the Night performance, Poirier ultimately finished Chandler in the third round with a rear-naked choke but that didn’t seem to end the bad blood between them.
Ever since that night, Poirier and Chandler have consistently found a way to circle back to the rivalry that seems almost destined to continue long after they’re both done fighting.
